Public invited to learn about 'The Soup That Blue Up Twitter' at ...

The public is invited to learn about “The Soup That Blue Up Twitter,” presented by Del Mar-Leucadia Branch of American Association of University Women at its annual celebration of Tech Trek. The event will be Saturday May 11, 10 a.m. to noon at Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Dr., Encinitas. There will be a social/chat time at 10 a.m. followed by the program at 10:30 a.m.

Dr. Elinne Becket, associate professor of Biological Sciences in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at California State University San Marcos, will talk about the beauty of doing science, which is the shared curiosity and collaboration among people working towards answering important questions about the world. Becket will talk about building this community, the importance of open science, and how soup forgotten in the back of the fridge led to scientists from across the globe coming together in a joyous exploration of scientific discovery.AAUW Del Mar-Leucadia Branch will introduce 10 seventh grade girls from San Dieguito Union High School District who were selected to attend Tech Trek, a STEM week-long residential camp at University of California San Diego. An additional three girls were selected for the Tech Trek Virtual Camp. Former Tech Trek participants will share their camp experiences. AAUW has been sponsoring Tech Trek camps for 25 years. The camps provide knowledge of the breadth of the STEM fields and the role of and opportunities for women in these fields.AAUW is a national organization that advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Membership in AAUW is open to anyone with a two-year college degree or higher. AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership.The Del Mar-Leucadia Branch serves coastal San Diego communities. It reflects the varied interests of its members with programs open to the public and special interest groups such as Great Decisions, casual dining, three book groups, and a bridge group.
