Tottenham Hotspur projected XI for Premier League clash at Newcastle
When Tottenham faces Newcastle Sunday expect to see what José Mourinho thinks is his best Tottenham team. With only Ben Davies and Matt Doherty out and several players ready following the international break facing a weaker team, expect a strong Tottenham side, set-up to control the ball and the game. Here is the Xi we think José Mourinho will use.Familiar Formation for Tottenham
Long-term, the 4-2-3-1 may not be the best formation for Tottenham, however, it is the system most often used by Mourinho at Spurs and is the likely approach on Sunday. Given Tottenham will have a left-back available – which it did not seem earlier this week – the Spurs will be in a back four.
And while we have argued here at HotspurHQ for a front two, we do not believe Mourinho is going to go that route with Heung-Min Son back available from injury. While much of the team picks itself at this point in the season, there are still several positions where Mourinho is going to have to make a decision, which will ultimately influence how Spurs approach the match.
Two positions that seemingly do not have a decision to make – due to the lack of choices – are the right and left fullback spots with Doherty and Davies out of contention. With fullbacks top of mind, let’s look first at who starts defensively for Tottenham against Newcastle.
