Top 20 Central Defenders Named And Ranked With Ruben Dias Only Sixth

Premier League boasts four out of the top 10 spots, but Manchester City ace Dias doesn't crack top five.

A ranking of the best central defenders in world football this season has placed Manchester City's rising star Ruben Dias in sixth spot.

It's actually the Portuguese sensation's defensive partner, John Stones, who is No 1 on the list compiled by Football Critic and based on their statistical algorithm, which is updated each week.

The 23-year-old is widely seen as the best young defender in European football, but in this analysis he is pushed down the rankings by Stones and second-place Thiago Silva. At age 36, the Brazil international has made a rapid and impressive impact at Chelsea this term.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos is another veteran great riding high in fourth, just behind Bayer Leverkusen's 22-year-old Edmond Tapsoba, who's third and the highest Bundesliga centre-back.

Harry Maguire is in 10th spot, the Manchester United skipper placing just below another touted young defender - RB Leipzig's 22-year-old Dayot Upamecano - and just ahead of Chelsea pair Andreas Christensen (11th) and Kurt Zouma (12th).

As well as the west London club, City also boast three centre-backs in the top 20 as Aymeric Laporte is in 14th spot, just ahead of a player linked to a move to a Premier League club this summer: Real Madrid's Raphael Varane.
