Sarah Paulson reveals how to pronounce Ratched
Ratched has finally dropped onto Netflix, seeing Sarah Paulson star in the Ryan Murphy series.
But have you been pronouncing her character’s name correctly?
In a post on the director’s Instagram, the actress reveals the right way to say Nurse Mildred Ratched.
‘Hello. I’m Sarah Paulson. Today is Ratched premiere day. Ratchet. Ratched. Ratchet. Ratched. Ratchet. How would you say it?’ the 45-year-old quizzed.
‘She says, “Mildred Ratchet.” I don’t say Mildred Ratched, even though that’s really how it’s spelled.’
Sarah then went on to reveal a ‘funny little anecdote’ from production – joking that she’ll decide whether it’s funny or not.
‘Very early on in shooting, we were shooting a scene in the nurse’s lounge, where Mildred meets Gwendoline (Cynthia Nixon),’ she expressed.
‘And you’ll come to find very quickly that story becomes one of my most cherished parts of this story, and I can’t wait for you guys to see that…’
The star pressed: ‘I had to shoot a scene where I had to tell Gwendoline that bologna is my favourite food, and that is not an easy thing.’
The show, which landed on Netflix earlier this week, is the prequel to One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest seeing showrunner Murphy explore the beginnings of Ratched and what turned her into this power-hungry nurse.
However, in a plot twist, the writers have put the women front and centre of the storyline in wake of the Me Too movement.
‘I think all of us in life come up against experiences or people where we feel we are not safe to be who we really are,’ Sarah Paulson recently told Metro.co.uk. ‘When that happens, I think we all come up with some kind of armour in order to keep ourselves protected.
‘So I’ve certainly had that experience and I do think Mildred [Ratched] is certainly a person who is very frightened of what she doesn’t know, and also of revealing herself to anyone.
‘She is very, very good at hiding from others. Except for certain people in the story, and as the story goes on she reveals more and more of who she is, which I think is surprising for her, and unexpected to you.’
Ratched is available to stream now on Netflix.
