Tokyo Olympics latest news and updates LIVE 21:15 CEST: An Olympian... aged just 12?

Throughout the history of the Olympic Games, there have been numerous examples of supremely talented young people making an enormous impact on the world stage.

The Tokyo Olympics will see a continuation of that trend, as 12-year-old prodigy Hend Zaza prepares to make her Olympics debut. The Syrian table tennis star booked her ticket to the Olympics back in February 2020, as she defeated 42-year-old Mariana Sahakian of Lebanon in the Asian qualification stages.

20:00 CEST: Who are the most successful ever Olympians?

The long-awaited Tokyo Olympic Games are almost upon as, with the competition getting underway on Friday.

Athletes from across the globe will be looking to write their names into Olympics legend, and add to the rich history of this competition.

19:00 CEST: Hubbard aims for historic medal

Laurel Hubbard is set to make history as she becomes the first transgender athlete to compete in the Olympic Games.

The 43-year-old New Zealand weightlifter will be participating in the +87 kilos category, the highest female weight classification. Read the full story here.

18:00 CEST: Lillard a name to watch in basketball

USA Basketball had some struggles during their warm-up matches, losing to Nigeria and Australia before beating Argentina and Spain, but one player that impressed in all facets was Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard. He will be determined to keep up this form during Team USA's Olympic run, as they go in search of the gold medal.

17:00 CEST: One day away from the Olympics

Although some sports have already got underway at the Olympic Games, the official ceremony and opening of the event will take place on Friday, July 23. As fans across the world wait to see what is in store ahead of these next few weeks, the Olympics' Instagram account has tried to get people into the mood by showing some fried rice art.

16:30 CEST: Richarlison inspires Brazil to win

Richarlison netted a 30-minute hat-trick for Brazil as they beat Germany 4-2. Germany pulled a goal back through Nadiem Amiri in the 57th minute to make it 3-1 in favour of the Selecao, but a 63rd-minute sending off for Max Arnold made their task that much harder. Ragnar Ache cut the deficit to just one goal in the 84th minute, but Paulinho put the game beyond doubt after scoring in the last minute.

15:30 CEST: Some surprise results

A revamped France side - featuring Andre-Pierre Gignac, Florian Thauvin and Lucas Tousart as the big names - lost 4-1 to Mexico, while Australia shocked Argentina by beating them 2-0. Hosts Japan got their campaign off to a winning start by beating South Africa 1-0, with Real Madrid youngster Take Kubo scoring a wonderful goal.

15:00 CEST: Spain get off to slow start

Spain could only draw 0-0 against Egypt in their opening match at the Olympic Games, much to the frustration of head coach Luis de la Fuente. La Roja also saw two players go off injured in Oscar Mingueza and Dani Ceballos. Read the match report HERE.
