AC Milan get their Serie A campaign underway with a visit from Bologna on Monday (7:45 PM kick-off).

The 18-time Italian champions have been enduring a difficult few seasons, finishing outside Serie A’s top four in each of the last seven years. Since coming second to Juventus in 2012, they’ve fallen as low as 10th with last season’s campaign seeing them end in sixth, a familiar spot for the Milanese giants.

It’s been a quiet summer with Alexis Saelemaekers, Simon Kjær and Ante Rebić becoming permanent acquisitions following respective loan spells. Zlatan Ibrahimović also confirmed he’d be staying in Lombardy as the Rossoneri look to rekindle former glories.

As for Bologna, the expectation is another season playing in Serie A’s mid-table. The Felsinians ended 12th last time out, 19 points adrift of European qualification but, more importantly, 12 above the relegation zone. Siniša Mihajlović, who made headlines after being diagnosed with an acute form of leukaemia, would love nothing more than denying the club he once managed a victory.

AC Milan & Bologna’s previous line-ups:
  • AC Milan (vs Shamrock Rovers): Donnarumma; Calabria, Kjaer, Gabbia, Hernández; Bennacer, Kessié; Castillejo, Calhanoglu, Saelemaekers; Ibrahimovic.
  • Bologna (vs Torino): Skorupski; Mbaye, Medel*, Danilo, Denswil; Schouten, Svanberg; Juwara, Soriano, Barrow; Palacio.

Alessio Romagnoli, Mateo Musacchio and Andrea Conti are all recovering from injury while Rafael Leão has also been absent. Gary Medel is Bologna’s only absentee, the Chilean is simultaneously injured and suspended.

Players to watch:

  • AC Milan: The arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who played a pivotal role in Milan’s most recent Serie A championship-winning campaign, reinvigorated Stefano Pioli’s side as they would go on to finish sixth last season. Since rejoining this past January, the former Sweden international has registered 10 goals, plus creating five more, across 18 league outings. Heading into the Rossoneri’s opening league game of the new season, Ibrahimovic was on hand to defeat Europa League qualifying rivals Shamrock Rovers.
  • Bologna: It’s going to be a challenge for ex-Milan boss Mihajlović to leave the San Siro with all three points, but if anyone is programmed to fight strongly it’s him. The Emilia-Romagna based team can still count on the services of Roberto Soriano, who enjoyed a strong 2019/20 campaign. The 29-year-old midfielder netted five times in 29 appearances while equally proving himself to be creative with five assists.
Scoreline prediction: AC Milan 2-0 Bologna
