City suffered heartbreak at the death against promotion chasing Sheffield United as two late goals condemned them to their first defeat in nine matches.

Anis Mehmeti gave the Robins the lead from the penalty spot, before Ryan One equalised for the visitors late on, and it was Harrison Burrows who snatched the points deep in added time after Rob Dickie had seen red.

It was an even start between the two sides, but Liam Manning was forced into an early substitution after just six minutes.

Mark Sykes went down on the far right hand side, and was unable to continue being replaced by Anis Mehmeti.

It was Max Bird who pushed City’s first attack of the match when he won the ball in midfield, before playing it out wide to Yu Hirakawa whose pass to Jason Knight was perfectly weighted. But, the City skipper could not hold off the two Sheffield United defenders and the ball was cleared.

Nahki Wells went agonisingly close to opening the scoring on 25 minutes. Some brilliant work on the left hand side from Yu caught the defenders unawares and Wells connected with the ball from close range but it went just wide of the post.

And just a minute later, United had a chance of their own as Gustavo Hamer burst forward on the right, but his finally effort somehow came off the far post.

As the first half came to an end, the Robins continued to push and Knight won the ball back brilliantly in midfield before playing it out wide to Yu. United defended well, but couldn’t prevent a corner as City looked to finish the half strong.

Liam Manning made a half-time substitution, with Wells making way for Sinclair Armstrong.

The second half started much as the first with even amounts of possession, but City got forward at pace through Kal Naismith, who won his side a free kick.

Max Bird whipped the ball into the box and Knight’s header clipped the outside of the post for the best chance of the second period.

With 22 minutes left to play, Cam Pring made way for Haydon Roberts.

On 74 minutes, City were awarded a penalty after Bird played through Armstrong who was subsequently fouled inside the box by goalkeeper Michael Cooper.

Mehmeti stepped up and buried the spot kick in the left-hand corner of the net with 15 minutes to play.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, Liam Manning made his final changes, with Naismith and Earthy making way for Elijah Morrison and Rob Dickie.

Sheffield United pushed for the equaliser late on and the pressure told on 87 minutes, when Ryan One headed home from a corner.

In added time, City were down to 10 men after Dickie was shown a straight red card fr a professional foul as Sheffield United got forward. The free kick was well saved by Max O’Leary.

But City were undone deep in added time as Burrows scored the winner with the last kick of the match, condemning City to their first home defeat of the season.

Starting XI:O’Leary, Vyner, Naismith (Dickie 80), Pring, Sykes (Mehmeti 6), McGuane, Knight (C), Bird, Hirakawa, Earthy (Morrison 80), Wells (Armstrong 45)

Subs: Bajic, Atkinson, Roberts, Mayulu, Cornick
