Manchester United confirmed Ralf Rangnick’s interim appointment until the end of the season on Monday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked last weekend and Rangnick has replaced the Norwegian at Old Trafford on a temporary basis.

“The squad is full of talent and has a great balance of youth and experience. All my efforts for the next six months will be on helping these players fulfil their potential, both individually and, most importantly, as a team,” Rangnick said upon his appointment.

United will quickly turn their attention to their Thursday night clash with Arsenal, as Rangnick looks to improve upon the job done by Solskjaer and the two solid results — against Villarreal and Chelsea — overseen by Carrick.

It’s hoped that Rangnick will take charge for that game, but it’s possible that Carrick will still be on the touchline due to the German’s work permit issues.

Barcelona keen on Martial – reportsBarcelona are eyeing-up a swoop for Anthony Martial during the January transfer window – according to reports.

The 25-year-old has slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford this season after Jadon Sancho – and returning five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo – were signed.

Martial did score against Everton, though, and appeared during the heavy defeat to Watford.

Barcelona are on the look-out to replace Sergio Aguero after he was diagnosed with a heart condition and the Catalan giants also lost Argentina superstar Lionel Messi to PSG this summer.

According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Martial has been earmarked as one option in that regard.

The report also suggests that the cash-strapped La Liga side have even sent officials to Old Trafford with a view to that move.

Cavani provides injury updateUnited striker Edinson Cavani has dropped a timely hint over his fitness before the Arsenal game.

Having been made to play second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo this season, the former PSG striker combined with the Portugal captain to devastating effect against Tottenham; both finding the net during that 3-0 victory.

It’s been a time of change for United since then, though.

Ralf Rangnick has been appointed as interim manager following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking, while Michael Carrick oversaw games against Villarreal and Chelsea as caretaker.

Cavani was missing for those and has not played for United since November 2, the 2-2 draw with Atalanta, due to his ongoing tendon problem.

But could the 34-year-old Uruguay favourite be set for a Premier League return on Thursday night?

Scholes makes Ronaldo selection demandPaul Scholes believes Cristiano Ronaldo must return to the starting line-up for United’s clash with Arsenal on Thursday.

Michael Carrick took the decision to exclude the 36-year-old from the team for the 1-1 draw with Chelsea – naming Ronaldo on the bench as he made late cameo vs the Premier League leaders.

Jadon Sancho capitalised on a mistake from Jorginho to put United ahead at Stamford Bridge, before Aaron Wan-Bissaka found himself penalised for a kick on Thiago Silva allowing for the Chelsea captain to atone for his earlier error.

Carrick’s selection saw defensive-minded midfield trio of Fred, Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay picked as Bruno Fernandes edged forward into a false nine role, with Marcus Rashford and Sancho leading the line.

Young Boys game could be moved – reportsUnited could see their Champions League match at home to Young Boys moved to a neutral venue, according to reports.

Scheduled for Wednesday, December 8 with an 8pm kick-off, the setting of that match has come under question due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19.

As it has across wider society, the devastating pandemic continues to take hold of the elite sporting calendar and, in turn, the emergence of a new Omicron strain of the virus has thrown up more concerns.

According to The Telegraph, UEFA are attempting to discover whether the Young Boys squad will have to quarantine back in Switzerland for 10 days upon their would-be return from Manchester.

The same article reports that if the elite sport exemption rule doesn;t apply, then the game would be switched to a venue in a neutral country, or postponed if such a contingency can’t be found.

United have ‘no chance’ – OwenIt was a decent enough point for United against Chelsea given the circumstances.

But they will have ‘no chance’ moving forward if they continue to ‘abuse’ Cristiano Ronaldo.

Or at least that’s how former United player Michael Owen sees the situation;

We were at Old Trafford for the City game the other day and all of a sudden it’s just exactly the same at Chelsea, they leave Cristiano Ronaldo up front on his own. That’s almost abuse! Having someone that good in your team and then playing everyone defensively and saying; ‘That’s alright, we’ll just hope he nicks a goal’, he’ll end up being average.

United set to scout Haidara – reportsUnited are being tipped to scout RB Leipzig midfielder Amadou Haidara over the next two games ahead of a potential January move – according to Mail Online.

The 23-year old is highly regarded by United interim manager Ralf Rangnick who signed the Mali international from RB Salzburg in 2018.

United have been looking at midfielders and scouts are understood to be going to watch Haidara against Union Berlin on Friday and against City in the Champions League next week.

Haidara can play as a defensive midfielder, but has the energy to play box to box. He scored his first Champions League goal for Leipzig against United last year in a 3-2 win.

He has 24 international caps and is understood to have a £33million release clause.

How Manchester United could line-up under Ralf RangnickManchester United have confirmed the appointment German coach Ralf Rangnick as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s successor as manager on an interim basis.

United, who made the decision to sack Solskjaer last week following their the 4-1 defeat to Watford on Saturday afternoon, made the decision to search for an interim boss to take the team through until the end of the season, before appointing their next permanent manager next summer.

Michael Carrick oversaw two games as caretaker boss. And despite interest in PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino as their next permanent long-term boss, the French club rejected an approach to appoint him straight away and United turned to Rangnick.

United will pay out his contract with Russian giants Lokomotiv Moscow and he could be in the dugout against Arsenal on Thursday night, subject to his work visa being sorted.
